Serie B 22/23: Genoa - Venezia postmatch

January 16, 2023

In Giornata 20 of the 2022/23 Serie B season, first official match after the winter break, Venezia conceded away at Stadio Luigi Ferraris against Alberto Gilardino's Genoa. After a brilliant first half and a balanced start to the second half, it was a shot of Rossoblu top scorer Massimo Coda to put the hosts ahead just five minutes before the end of the game. Despite many last minute efforts from Paolo Vanoli's squad to earn a draw, the match ended in a 1-0 win for the Grifone.

Venezia manager Paolo Vanoli and defender Luca Ceppitelli spoke to the press after the match.

Paolo Vanoli:

“We are not happy with the result, but we have to appreciate a very good performance. Unfortunately, in the end what counts and what is lacking in our situation are points: the team, however, is learning and was able to defend on a difficult field. We are all together on the road to salvation, it's a shame we didn't get at least a point, which would have been good for morale, but I told the team I want to see the same spirit on Saturday at home.

Some episodes against us certainly changed the course of the match, but that's how the game works, we can't feel sorry for ourselves. We have to continue on our path, because we have shown that we can get to the result, but we have to manage the phases of the game better. Serie B is completely different from Serie A, and it is a difficult reality to digest, but I find in everyone the desire to get out of this situation: in this, I can be proud of them.”

Luca Ceppitelli:

“The team did not deserve to lose this game, we remained compact until the last minute and could have brought a point home. Genoa is a strong team, with an attack that does not allow distractions, not even for a second, at the cost of paying dearly for them.

Our performance was also good on the defensive front, but we still need to work on some details. Looking at the standings is not pleasant, but we must not think too much about it: there is a whole half season still to go.”
