LECCE-VENEZIA FC: POST MATCH

April 6, 2025

At the end of the Lecce–Venezia FC match, valid for Matchday 31 of the 2024/25 Enilive Serie A Championship and ending with a 1-1 result, arancioneroverde head coach Eusebio Di Francesco and forward Christian Gytkjaer shared their thoughts on the game.

Eusebio Di Francesco:
"We did well to react to Lecce's aggressive start, especially in the second half, when we created several chances. We lacked determination in the final pass and the ruthlessness needed when it came time to shoot. We scored through an own goal, but it was still a situation we had prepared in training. The match hinged a lot on set pieces, which often decide the outcome of a game, even though after the 1-1 we dropped too deep and made some technical errors in the build-up, even on simple plays—that’s exactly what we need to focus on and improve.
The technical aspects make a real difference at this stage: the quality of the final decision, the correct execution of a pass—these are all elements we’re lacking in terms of maturity in certain moments of the game, even if I did see some positive signs in others.
Lecce is one of the best teams on the counter; when they win the ball, they move it forward immediately. We were perhaps a bit disorganized in our defensive setup, and that’s why I asked the defenders to press higher during possession and keep the lines tighter. When we get to the finish, we need to be more clear-headed, calm, and precise—it’s something we’re working on and will keep working on, even if time is not on our side."

Christian Gytkjaer:
"Today’s match was hard-fought, very physical and 'dirty'—neither team wanted to lose. It was a real battle, and we know that our next match against Monza will be the same, so we have to prepare for it in the best way possible, but we’ll be ready.
We played some good football, but it’s not enough: we need the points. At the Penzo against Monza, with the support of our fans, we want to go out and get them."
